Chief to meet with Hmong community

PONTIAC, Mich., March 9, 2002

This city's police chief plans to meet with members of the area's growing Hmong community in the wake of a shooting that involved a dispute between a group of Hmong youths.

"I want to build a relationship," Pontiac Chief Rollie Gackstetter told The Oakland Press for a Saturday story. "We're going to be reaching out to them."

Investigators said a dispute between rival gangs of Hmong youths in the city appears to have prompted the March 1 shooting, which seriously injured 5-year-old Nali Vue.

Vang Ter Lor, 17, is charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder and using a gun to commit a felony. If convicted, Lor faces up to life in prison.

Gackstetter hopes to open a dialogue with the Hmong community and to work more closely with other law enforcement agencies to prevent future gang activity.
